Holding the Sheriff Accountable
Black and brown men are far more likely to be stopped and searched by police, charged with crimes and sentenced to longer prison terms than white men found guilty of the same offenses. Add to this the violent acts of police brutality, criminal justice reform is needed now more than ever.
On August 13, 2021, I had the opportunity to speak about the County Sheriff’s decision to put Blake Kilpatrick, a sheriff’s deputy, back to work. For those of you who aren’t aware, two years ago, Blake Kilpatrick beat Charles Tony while he was handcuffed and defenseless. When looking at the videotape, you can see excessive force being used. Once a person is put in handcuffs a whole new set of protocols begin to apply. If you google #blakekilpatrick, you will find video evidence of this atrocity. Based on this powerful piece of evidence, I believe Blake Kilpatrick should be fired. I am concerned. We are concerned.
At the time of the incident, the sheriff deferred the issue to the federal department stating the issue is out of his hands. When I approached the sheriff for comment on his decision, I informed him that it is important for our citizens to understand his reasons for putting Kilpatrick back to work.
The community event scheduled for August 13, 2021 was created to provide a platform for you to get your questions answered. When the Sheriff backed out of the meeting, I still showed up to let you all know that we are still wanting answers.
I am here now to keep the lines of communication open so that you can share your questions, thoughts and concerns about criminal justice reform in Hamilton county.
