Smarter Funding Distribution for Equity

Currently, Tennessee ranks 46th in the nation for student funding and support. On a local level, the sad truth is that not all schools in Hamilton County have achieved equitable standards, but it is possible. How do we achieve equity in schools? We have to first understand the needs of the children in their respective schools. Each child and their school has different needs and we have to understand these needs in a way that better supports the children within their community.

I am one of 9 on the County Commission and my hope is that as we continue to discuss and distribute funding, we remember the inequities present among the districts, schools and  communities. We must create equity in Hamilton County before we can say that all of Hamilton County is a place that is thriving. The goal is to become a destination where all families can settle down, raise their children and thrive in our workforce.

The County Commission has to be vigilant about supporting the causes and needs that improve the wellbeing of children in every district. What’s more promising is that we have an opportunity to collaborate across the divide and develop a coordinated effort among City Council members, School Board members and our communities so that we can continuously improve the lives of students, teachers and families in our marginalized communities.
