A Way Forward
Everyone needs a place to call home that they can afford. I am encouraged by the programs that already exist in Hamilton County like Habitat for Humanity, Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, Metropolitan Ministries and new programs like the Tennessee Housing Development Agency that are helping to move the needle forward getting people housed, keeping them housed and setting them up for success.
But we can’t stop there. When the cost of living goes beyond a family's ability to keep a roof over their head, we have a problem.
Affordable housing is an ongoing issue in Hamilton County. Additional resources and supports are needed to remedy the fact that families are struggling and businesses are struggling. We need better access to resources for families struggling to make ends meet. We need opportunities for growth that address the financial gaps families are experiencing because of COVID and lost wages.
The American Rescue Plan offers some support to get us back on track, but we need a plan that will keep us on track.
This is a Hamilton County issue and it will take all us coming together to find a way forward. We can find and create solutions that support the needs of our communities.
I want to hear from you. What is your experience with finding and keeping affordable housing? What are your ideas for addressing the affordable housing crisis in Hamilton County?
