Equitable Redistricting
A question was posed on social media as to why I think the current districting is unfair. Let me be clear. Redistricting isn’t about being fair or unfair although when we look at access, support and resources, it is clear that there are areas of the county that have greater access and support.
Equitable and fair redistricting is about ensuring the access and distribution of resources among all districts of Hamilton County are fair. There are districts within Hamilton County that have been cut off and/or left out in terms of economic growth, support and access to viable resources that would drastically improve the conditions residents are living in. We need to ensure that as we discuss redistricting for the next 10 years that these districts are not forgotten.
It is true that disparities exist in Hamilton County. To say otherwise is turning a blind eye and excusing the mindsets and behaviors that have kept marginalized communities underserved.
Please understand. I know that economic development and recovery is not one dimensional. Redistricting is only one piece of the puzzle. We need to put more effort, time and attention into addressing other inequities as well including health disparities, quality of schools and access to better paying jobs in these communities. Hamilton County has the potential and the viability to be a place where families can settle down anywhere in the county and thrive!
We, as County Commissioners, have a responsibility to think and do for all residents of Hamilton County and my hope is that as we move forward, we take the needs of marginalized communities into consideration and vote on creating a more equitable Hamilton County TOGETHER. This is my desire and I hope my fellow Commissioners would agree.
