Equity in Schools

The 2020 census indicated that the number of black people in Hamilton County has decreased over the last 10 years.

I can fathom that one reason for this is due to the continued decline in the quality of schools in underserved communities.

There is a stark contrast between what certain communities receive over other communities in Hamilton County.

It makes sense that people of color are leaving in search of better learning environments where their families can thrive.

We show our children what they’re worth when we neglect their schools and their communities. We need to do better.

With the increase in the county’s budget due to the American Rescue Plan and the COVID relief funds, we have an opportunity to specify funding that improves the quality of education for our children in our underserved communities, both academically and structurally.

We, as a commission, can not continue to deflect and sit idly by saying it is not our responsibility. We may not be solely responsible, but we must be a part of the solution.
